Google may soon bring back Play Store app update notifications

Workarounds may no longer be required to view app update notifications.

What you need to know

  • Google might be planning to bring back app update notifications to the Play Store.
  • The toggle to show notifications when apps have finished updating is starting to appear for a small number of users.
  • The Play Store had stopped showing notifications for updated apps in January this year.

In January this year, the Google Play Store stopped showing notifications for updated apps. The sudden change led to the development of a few apps that made it possible for users to keep track of all the apps that are updated in the background. Now, it looks like Google might be thinking of bringing back app update notifications to the Play Store.

As reported by the folks over at Android Police, some users have started seeing additional notification setting toggles for app updates. The feature is said to have made a comeback in the Play Store version 20.7.16-all [0] [PR] 317546459 on Android 11 Beta 1. However, it looks like this is part of a server-side test currently, so not everyone can access the feature simply by updating to the latest Play Store version on a device running Android 11 Beta.

The feature appears to be disabled by default for users who have started seeing it, so if you are among the lucky few who have regained notifications for app updates, you will need to head over to the Notification Settings in the Play Store to enable it. If Google is indeed serious about bringing back the feature, it will likely begin making notifications for updated apps available to users on Android 10 and a few older versions sometime in the next few weeks.
