Huawei's Mate 20 Pro is now available in India for ₹69,990 ($990).
Huawei is the second-largest smartphone vendor behind Samsung, but the company didn't have a coherent strategy for India until this year. The manufacturer relied on sub-brand Honor to drive sales, but that has changed as this year saw the introduction of the P20 Pro and the Nova 3 series in the country. Huawei is looking to continue that momentum by launching the Mate 20 Pro in the country.
From the onset, it's easy to see that the Mate 20 Pro is going after the Galaxy Note 9 in India. The phone is set to go on sale exclusively from Amazon India for ₹69,990 ($990), just ₹2,000 ($30) more than what the Note 9 retails for in the country.
The Mate 20 Pro builds on the strengths of the P20 Pro while offering a new set of features that make it stand out. First up is the hardware: the Mate 20 Pro is powered by HiSilicon's Kirin 980, which has a dual Neural Processing Unit. It is also the first chipset based on the 7nm node, and with Qualcomm and Samsung set to make the switch away from 10nm next year, the Kirin980 offers an early look at next-generation flagship performance.
The Mate 20 Pro is a viable alternative to the Galaxy Note 9.
The Kirin 980 features two cores in a tri-cluster design: there are two Cortex A76 cores clocked at 2.6GHz, two Cortex A76 at 1.9GHz, and four Cortex A55 cores at 1.8GHz. The result is blistering performance that's a cut above anything else in the market today. The device also has a Mali-G76 GPU with ten cores. The variant sold in India will come with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage as standard, and there's a new memory slot that can take in a 256GB card.
Things only get interesting as we make our way down the spec sheet. The Mate 20 Pro has a 6.39-inch QHD+ OLED screen that's just as vibrant and colorful as the Note 9, and while there's a notch up top, you can hide it from the settings. There's Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, AptX HD, IP68 dust and water resistance, and an in-display fingerprint sensor along with 3D face unlock.
The Mate 20 Pro has a 4200mAh battery with wireless charging, and its party trick is that it is able to change other devices. I tried it out with a Pixel 3 XL, and it works just as advertised. Place any other phone that can charge wirelessly on the rear of the Mate 20 Pro and the device will charge it up. When you do need to plug it in, Huawei's fast charging standard is one of the fastest in the market today. The bundled charger lets you go from flat to 70% in just over 30 minutes, and that 70% will be more than enough to last all day.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro review: The phone that does everything
Counting out the laundry list of features, the Mate 20 Pro has a unique camera arrangement: there's a primary 40MP camera joined by a 20MP wide-angle lens and an 8MP telephoto lens. The Mate 20 Pro is right up there with the likes of the Pixel 3 when it comes to taking photos, and there's a new night mode that holds up to Google's Night Sight.
As flagships go, the Note 9 delivers excellent value for its asking price, and it's great that there is now a viable alternative in the form of the Mate 20 Pro. I'll have much more to talk about the phone — including a detailed review — in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
