NVIDIA Shield gets Android 9 Pie and the new Hulu!

Wait — how old is this Android TV box again?

What you need to know

  • The Shield is being updated to Android 9.0 Pie today.
  • It'll have the new Hulu With Live TV app built in.
  • Plus improved color for HDR-enabled TVs.

NVIDIA Shield — which remains the only Android TV box you should buy — just keeps getting better and better. Never mind the fact that it's more than four years old — ancient by today's tech standards. (Also never mind that there may finally be an updated version waiting in the wings.) Today the Tegra X1-powered system becomes first Android TV box to be updated to Android 9.0 Pie.

As is the usual case, the "NVIDIA Shield Experience" version is number doesn't quite match up, but don't let that bother you any. Update 8.0 has a lot going on.

In addition to the Pie update — and the Android security updates that come with it, you'll also find:

  • A new featured called Match Content Color Space that will give more accurate colors on an HDR-enabled TV.
  • The new and improved Hulu app — which sports an updated user interface and features, and also has Hulu with Live TV. (You'll still need a subscription, of course.)
  • Updates "Display and Sounds" advanced setting info into two easier-to-navigate menus
  • Adds option to match content color space (Settings > Display & Sound > Advanced).
  • Improves volume dynamic range for USB and Bluetooth-connected headsets
  • Enables 720p refresh rate switching on supported apps
  • Adds "Disconnect Bluetooth accessories" option to quick settings
  • Adds IR power control options to customize on/off functionality
  • Adds option to turn off USB Power when Shield sleeps
  • Adds option to connect to 2.4 GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi network with shared SSID
  • Updates accessory firmware versions

The update is rolling out to Shield boxes now.

Additionally, the NVIDIA Shield TV Android app has received an update. It's not directly tied to the Shield Experience 8.0 update, but here's what's new anyway:

  • Better pairing with Bluetooth assisted discovery
  • Lower latency and better performance
  • IP pairing is now always an option
  • Allows for user feedback
  • Minor updates to the UI

Galaxy S10+ vs. Galaxy Note 9: Which should you buy?

Samsung's phones are a dominant force in the Android world. We use every single Samsung phone that comes out, all throughout the year, so we know just how they work and can offer wisdom on which one is right for you.

Samsung Galaxy S10+

Latest and greatest

$800 at Amazon

Pros

  • Compact and light with same screen size
  • New and improved screen
  • New ultra-wide camera
  • Faster wireless charging

Cons

  • Much more expensive for same core features

It's tough to argue with buying Samsung's latest high-end model. The Galaxy S10+ has slightly better specs, a nicer screen, new camera capabilities, and fresh features that all make it appealing to Samsung fans. It does everything the Galaxy Note 9 does, plus a little bit more — it's only missing the S Pen.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

For stylus fans

$700 at Amazon

Pros

  • S Pen stylus
  • Cheaper for overall comparable experience

Cons

  • Considerably larger and heavier
  • No wide-angle rear camera
  • Nearly a year old now

As the Galaxy S10+ is, a vast majority of its features and capabilities found in the Note 9 for less money. Yes its specs are just slightly lower-end, and it doesn't have the ultra-wide camera or new screen tech, but that may be worth the savings. Plus, it's the only choice out there if you want a great stylus for your phone.

The Galaxy S10+ is the latest top-end model from Samsung, but it shouldn't make us forget that the Note 9 was the hottest thing just a few months prior. Here's what you need to keep in mind when choosing between the two.

What's new in the Galaxy S10+

The Galaxy S10+ doesn't have one notable leg up on the Note 9, but rather a bunch of little upgrades that add up when you see them in aggregate. The display is the same size as the Note 9's but is miraculously even more bright and vivid. There's a new ultra-wide-angle camera that opens up new shooting possibilities. It keeps the other two cameras from the Note 9, so you don't lose anything in the transition. There's faster wireless charging, nearly on par with a wall plug.

The Galaxy S10+ does everything the Note 9 does, plus a handful of new and interesting features.

But the most notable difference, on top of all of those improvements, is the improved ergonomics of the Galaxy S10+. Though it has the same screen size, it's smaller in every dimension than the Note 9 — narrower, thinner, shorter. It's also 13% lighter than the Note 9, which is immediately noticeable when it's in your hand. Plus, with a new fingerprint sensor integrated into the display, you don't have that somewhat-awkward reach up to the back of the Note 9.

For the super spec nerds and power users out there, yes the Galaxy S10+ offers a new level of internal specs — provided you're willing to pay for it. You can load up the Galaxy S10+ with 12GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, considerably more than the Note 9, but honestly, for all but the most obsessed, you'll be just as happy with the base model of 8GB and 128GB, which matches the Note 9's offering.

Where the Galaxy S10+ and the Note 9 are the same

Though there are subtle differences at play, you can think of the Galaxy S10+ as a contemporary of the Note 9 rather than a replacement or an upgrade. The Galaxy S10+ may have improved on the Note 9 in a few key areas, but that shouldn't take away from what the Note 9 offers. In reality, the differences between the models are slight in many cases.

Can you really tell the difference between these phones in daily use? It's a marginal change.

For example, the processors: sure the Snapdragon 855 is more powerful, more capable and more efficient than the 845 — but the Note 9 is mighty as it is, and runs the new Android 9 Pie software without issue. The Galaxy S10+ has a slightly larger battery, too, but the real-world implications of such a tiny increase aren't necessarily going to be felt every day — particularly if you have to pay extra for it.

And then you get to the rest of the daily experience, which is basically shared whole cloth. The Galaxy Note 9 has IP68 resistance, an SD card slot, a headphone jack, stereo speakers, wireless charging, fast charging, and the exact same software. These little improvements on the Galaxy S10+ are notable, but not necessarily game-changers when it comes to how we typically use our phones.

Which should you buy?

Step one in this comparison is deciding how much money you're willing to spend on a new phone. Now that the Note 9 has been out for nearly a year, it's dropped over $300 from its MSRP; which means it's also over $100 cheaper than the new Galaxy S10+.

Stylus fans, or those who want to save, should consider getting a Note 9 — or waiting for the Note 10.

But if money isn't a factor, the decision of which one to buy comes down to just a few points. Do you need the S Pen stylus? If so, the Note 9 is your only option; and the S Pen is a really neat feature to have. (But remember the Galaxy Note 10 is almost here.) If instead you value having a more compact, lighter phone then you'll prefer the Galaxy S10+ — and in turn, you'll get a new ultra-wide rear camera, portrait mode selfies, slightly improved performance in the long run with more RAM and a better processor, and enhanced ergonomics. (Plus, for a little while, you'll have the hot new phone everyone's lusting after.)

Everything else between these phones is either identical or marginally different. Stick to the decision based on the price, S Pen, size, and a few key features, and you'll make the right choice.

Samsung Galaxy S10+

If money is no object, there's no replacement for getting the latest and greatest Galaxy.

The Galaxy S10+ builds on the Note 9 with the same core competencies, plus marginal improvements in specs, a new screen, a new camera, and a handful of features. There's nothing groundbreaking here, but a bunch of small improvements makes it clearly better than the Note 9.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

For stylus fans

The only choice if you need an S Pen, or want to save money while getting the same basic experience.

When you're price-conscious, but still desire the best Samsung can offer, it's worth looking at the Note 9 for about $100 less than the GS10+. Not only do you get the exclusive S Pen experience, but you also get effectively the same day-to-day features and quality.

Cut down your enemies then upgrade your gear in The Surge 2

Brutal combat, dismemberment, towering foes and high-tech upgrades are what The Surge 2 is all about

  • The Surge 2 is currently scheduled to release on September 24, 2019.

The Surge 2 is the next game from developer Deck13 Interactive and publisher Focus Home Interactive. Building on the foundation that the first game provided, The Surge 2 is an action-RPG with emphasis on the word "action" as brutal combat is the focus here.

You can use different scavenged bladers and other tools to cut your enemies down, limb from limb, then upgrade yourself using their remains. There's a new trailer for The Surge 2 that shows this all in action:

Veterans of the first game will notice that the environment is completely different: instead of making your way through a dangerous factory, the massive Jericho city is the nightmarish locale you'll have to survive. While cutting off limbs might be easier with small enemies, you're going to be facing towering machines and other extremely dangerous boss-type foes that might require some careful thinking and planning in order to bring down.

If you'd like to see even more gameplay from The Surge 2, you can check out some previously-released footage here. The Surge 2 is currently set to be available on PlayStation 4 on September 24, 2019.

Redmi K20 Pro is getting a stunning new 'Summer Honey' color option

It may take a while before Redmi brings the new color option to other markets.

What you need to know

  • Redmi K20 Pro will be available in a new Summer Honey color in China from August 1.
  • The company hasn't confirmed if the new color option will be launched in other markets, such as India.
  • In most markets outside China, the phone comes in Carbon Black, Flame Red, and Glacier Blue color options.

Xiaomi's Redmi sub-brand has introduced a new color option for its flagship K20 Pro smartphone. The new color, dubbed 'Summer Honey', will be available in China starting from August 1. It joins the existing Flame Red, Glacier Blue, and Carbon Black options that have been available since day one.

Redmi has hasn't announced any plans of launching the Summer Honey color option in markets outside China yet. However, depending on the kind of response it receives from consumers in China, there is a good chance that it will be offered in at least a few other markets in the near future.

The new Summer Honey color for the Redmi K20 Pro comes with a gradient finish, just like the Flame Red and Glacier Blue ones. What sets it apart from those, however, is the gold finish on the sides and around the pop-up selfie camera. Also, unlike the other colors, only the three most expensive memory variants of the phone will be available in Summer Honey.

Launched alongside the Redmi K20 in China this past May, the Redmi K20 Pro is one of the most impressive "affordable flagship" phones that have been released this year and is a great alternative to the OnePlus 7 and ASUS ZenFone 6. The Redmi K20, which happens to be its more affordable mid-range sibling, also packs great hardware and an identical design.

Get a first look at the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ in the new Aura White color

We've also seen renders in Black, Pink, and a Silver gradient.

What you need to know

  • A render has surfaced of the Note 10+ in a new Aura White color.
  • Previously, we've seen renders of the Note 10 in Black, Pink, and a Silver gradient.
  • The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 will be officially announced on August 7 at Samsung's Unpacked event.

Here's our first look at the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ in the new Aura White color with matching S Pen. Previously, we've seen the Note 10 models shown off in Black, Pink, and a gorgeous Silver gradient option.

The render comes courtesy of a tweet from Ishan Agarwal, and unfortunately, the Aura White color doesn't appear to be a gradient color like the Prism White on the S10 models. Rumors also point to the Note 10 being available in Blue and Green options as well.

However, we won't know for sure until Samsung launches the Note 10 on August 7 next week at the Unpacked event. It's also worth noting that despite how many colors are being teased, it's very possible, some colors will only be available in certain countries.

Along with the new color, we've learned some new details about the upcoming Samsung flagship in the weeks leading up to the launch. At first, it was thought it wouldn't include the Snapdragon 855+, but that was later contradicted by notable leaker Evan Blass.

It has also been rumored that the Note 10+ will support charging up to 45W and that all models of the Note 10 will come with a 25W fast charger. Could this be the last of the leaks before the Unpacked event? Time will tell, but the closer we get, the more we usually learn.

Meet the Lenovo Chromebook C340 and S340

The Lenovo C330 is our favorite model on the market right now, and it looks like it will be handing that crown directly to the C340 upon its release.

What you need to know

  • Lenovo dropped a YouTube video detailing three upcoming Chromebooks.
  • The popular C330 is being expanded to two screen sizes: 11.6-inch and 15-inch.
  • Lenovo is bringing extra ports and colors to this year's models.

I've seen a lot of new Chromebooks this summer, but this flashy product video detailing Lenovo's new lineup has me hungrier than ever. It shows off three new models: the Lenovo Chromebook C340-11 and C340-15 — the successors to our current favorite Chromebook, the 2-in1 C330, — and the Lenovo S340-14, a successor to the fold-flat clamshell S330.

Both C340-11 and S340-14 use the Celeron N4000 that we've been seeing in many new Chromebooks this year, while the C340-15 gives you the choice between a Pentium Gold or an eighth-gen Core i3, giving significant performance boosts over the MediaTek processors in last year's C330 and S330. All three models have options for 32 and 64GB storage, and the C340-15 is listed as having 128GB versions on Lenovo's Product Specifications site, but not in the U.S. The S340-14 looks like it might be skipping the U.S. market, too, with listings for Europe, Australia, and the Phillipines.

The only other big surprise here is that no 8GB models are shown for any of these Chromebooks, which isn't surprising seeing as the only Lenovo Chromebook with 8GB offerings right now is the Lenovo Yoga Chromebook C630. For the 11 and 14-inch models, 4GB is just fine, but it'd be nice to see an i3/8GB/128GB model of the C340-15 down the line. 4GB is workable, but more is always better.

The other big surprise here is that Lenovo is breaking out the colors this time and giving us some Sand Pink and Orchid Purple options for the C340-11 and S340-14, respectively. I'll admit that, while I love the Blizzard White of the C330, color helps the Chromebook stand out a little more. I would have gone crazy over a nice blue, but Sand Pink is a softer color that will appeal to more people.

Another upgrade for the 11 and 14-inch models is that they have two USB-A and USB-C ports, one on each side, and the full-size SD card reader has been swapped for a microSD card reader. I'm confused as to why the C340-15 only has one USB-A port, but so long as there are two USB-C ports, I think that's just fine. I'd rather have the C340-15's backlit, number pad-sporting keyboard over extra ports anyway.

Lenovo has dropped the style and the specs for these three new models, but it hasn't dropped prices or release dates yet. Personally, I'd hope to see these by November so that they can get in on the holiday shopping season. IFA is a month away now, maybe Lenovo will drop the details then.

For now, I'm just going to replay this video a few more times and drool over that C340-11.

Ditch the wires with these Qi car chargers

Driving is an excellent time to charge your phone up, especially if you tend to have long commutes. However, plugging and unplugging your phone every single time you get into the car is a pain, especially when so many of our phones have wireless charging that's perfect for this. Qi chargers have been slowly creeping into our offices and homes. If you're using a Qi-enabled phone, you should absolutely grab one of these chargers and go wire-free in the car.

Most dependable

iOttie Easy One Touch Wireless Qi Fast Charge Car Mount Kit

Staff pick

iOttie makes the most popular mounts on the market, and the most reliable of the Qi mounts around that's compatible with fast Qi charging Samsung and Apple phones. There are certainly flashier mount styles or more cutting edge mechanical mounts, but the iOttie's old-school spring-loaded clamps get the job done and usually last a while.

BYOC

Anker PowerWave Fast Wireless Car Charger with Air Vent Phone Holder

Anker's Qi car mount does not come with the actual charger you'd plug into the car's cigarette lighter. It's a good option if you already have a QC 3.0 car charger you already like. The mount here has some stabilizing feet that can help reduce the strain on your car's air vent and keep the mount from falling during bigger bumps.

Auto awesome

Bolt Car Mount and Qi Fast Wireless Charger with Auto Sense Locking

This mount is automatic and kinda magic. It uses an IR sensor to close the arms around your phone when you set it in place and a capacitive sensor to open the clamps when you arrive. This mount has a small battery inside it to power the arms when the car's not on, but I recommend manually powering the mount off before getting out of the car.

Squish Wireless Car Charger with QC 3.0 Car Charger

Most chargers make you choose between an air vent or dashboard mount, but this bundle from Squish comes with both mounting options, as well as a dual-port QC 3.0 charger to power the Qi cradle. Squish's mount uses a gravity-trigger, so you don't have to hassle with manual spring releases or automatic sensors.

ZealSound Fast Wireless Charge Slim Pad Station Dock

Most Qi chargers for the car are docks, but if you seldom need to mount your phone for directions — or you wish to stow your charging in the center console — this car charger is for you. It allows you to just plop your phone down in the recessed pad, which keeps the phone from slipping around, and you're ready to hit the road.

Magnets and Qi together

iOttie iTap 2 Wireless Magnetic Qi Wireless Charging Air Vent Mount

There are a few Qi magnetic mounts on the market right now, but most use thin magnetic rings that are supposed to sit perfectly around your phone's Qi coils. But those seldom work. Instead, this mount has you place a much stronger rectangular magnetic plate below the Qi coils, so that there's less chance of interference.

Sensors and magnets and springs

The biggest differentiators when picking your Qi car charger are going to be how the mount attaches to your car and how the mount grips your phone. If you prefer a no-nonsense mount that uses the standard springs, then the iOttie Easy One Touch Wireless is a great choice. It's a bit bulky in the dashboard-style, but it has a suction cup to easily stay on your window or dash so long as it's not a ridiculous temperature out. Plus, the spring mounts tend to last well over a year before wearing out.

If you want to go a little more new-school, the Squish Wireless Car Charger and its gravity grip are excellent so long as you mount your phone vertically. This bundle has the benefit of having both the air vent mount and dash/window mount options right there in the box. I prefer the air vent models because they tend to fit a wider array of vehicles. Plus, the air from the AC blows over the mount and your phone, which helps keep them cool as wireless charging generates some heat.
