QiStone 2 review: Backup power three ways

Freedom and flexibility in how you charge whatever you need.

Lets face it: wireless charging hasn't taken over the world like so many of us had hoped it would. Adoption for Qi charging has been slow, and the products have been boring, with very few accessories jumping out to really blow us away. One of the first I ever looked at was called the QiStone, a simple battery shaped like a smooth, flat rock that charged your phone wirelessly when you weren't near a cable. It wasn't particularly useful, but it was a fun look at what the future might look like if the tech got popular.

Fast forward to today. Wireless charging is in every high-end phone, but it's still not really a huge thing. Even Apple has struggled with making a single form of wireless charging work for everything, and very few other companies have even tried. But when the Fonesalesman folks reached out about an updated version of the QiStone, it included some important new features to fit in better with the realities of our present.

But is this battery something you should pay to stick in your back pocket? Let's take a look.

Charging everything forever

QiStone 2

$80 at Amazon

Choose your charger

Fonesalesman has rebooted its aging QiStone product line, including more charging features and making the battery itself capable of being powered by a Qi charger. But the focus on a "nature-inspired" design makes it an enemy of glass phones everywhere.

The Good

  • Decent battery capacity
  • USB-C PD is excellent
  • Additional USB-A port gives you flexibility
  • Easily pocketable

The Bad

  • Good luck keeping a glass phone on this thing
  • Wireless charging isn't particularly fast
  • Expensive

QiStone 2 What keeps me amped

Out of the box, this is a fairly standard small battery. It's not quite as thin as some of the other 8000mAh batteries out there today, and that's because QiStone 2 has two wireless charging zones on it. One up top, and one underneath. This means you can wirelessly charge pretty much anything by putting it on top, but it also means you can put the battery itself on a wireless charging mat to charge it. You never need to use a cable if you don't want to, which is kind of cool.

This is basically the Swiss Army Knife of battery backups, especially if used occasionally instead of every day.

For those who would prefer to use a cable, you have a standard rectangular USB- A port as well as the newer and more capable USB-C port. This Type C port is Power Delivery enabled, which means it will rapidly charge other supported devices. The Type A port is really more for accessories, like headphones or fitness trackers, but you can use both ports at the same time if you so choose. And if you want to quickly charge this thing up, you're obviously going to want to use Type C.

Using QiStone 2 couldn't be simpler. Drop your phone on the flat side of the grey river rock, and look for the green light to appear. When you see a green light, whatever you put up top is charging. When you see a red light, something isn't positioned quite right. If you want to know how much power you have remaining, you press the one button sitting up top and it will turn on the blue indicator lights. Each one represents 25%, so if all four are lit you're fully charged. Doesn't get much simpler than this, and the battery will charge a phone while it is being charged via USB-C, which isn't something you see in every battery.

If you'd rather not slip this battery in your pocket or a bag, QiStone includes a small accessory loop so you can connect it to your bag or a lanyard. This battery is a little heavy to hang from a set of keys, but it's easy enough to find a good place to tuck it away if you're not using it.

QiStone 2 What let me down

If you're using a Pixel 3 or some other phone with texture on the back, or even a thin case with a little bit of grip, QiStone 2 works exactly as advertised. But if you want to put a phone with a fully glass back on this charger, you're going to have a bad time. The textured design is not enough to provide grip, which means many glass phones slide off the charging surface with relative ease. And if you happen to bump the table this thing is sitting on, you can all but guarantee the battery is no longer charging the phone because it has probably fallen off entirely. This is easy enough to fix with a thin case, but not everyone rolls like that and it seems trivial to have made this body a little more grippy.

Don't even think about trying to wirelessly charge a glass phone on this thing if it's not in a case.

I'm pretty spoiled when it comes to wireless chargers, because I have Samsung Fast Chargers everywhere in my house, and that's probably why I found the wireless charge speed of the QiStone so sluggish. I put a fully dead Pixel 3 on this thing, and 15 minutes later not only had the phone not turned on yet but it was also less than 5% charged. Once the phone was on, the battery charged to 25% in 30 minutes, but compared to a Fast Charger that's still not great. It's silly to expect a battery-based charger to offer the same functionality as a desktop charger, but I had hoped for something slightly faster in the wireless charger.

It's also important to highlight the price of this thing. Put simply, $80 can get you a lot of battery if all you care about is capacity. That's money you spend when you want a battery backup for a USB-C laptop, not something you'll use to charge your phone one and a half times. But that cost is because of all the extra tech in here, which is important to keep in mind. This thing can deliver power to basically anything, in whatever format I choose, and that's not nothing. But even with that in mind, it's a little difficult to justify the cost.

QiStone 2 Should you buy it?

This is absolutely not for everyone. If you need a battery to last you a couple of days no matter what, your money is better spent elsewhere. And if you have an all-glass phone and don't want to use a case, there are options more appropriate for you.

4 out of 5

But if you want a charger to use just in case you use a little more juice and want to top off, QiStone 2 is cool as hell. Being able to wirelessly charge as well as charge via USB-C PD and toss a MicroUSB cable in there, is the kind of flexibility I appreciate. This is basically the Swiss Army Knife of battery backups, especially if used occasionally instead of every day. And if that's something you'd spend the extra cash on, this battery is likely to serve you well for quite a while.

Time to decide between the Galaxy Watch Active and the Michael Kors Sofie

We know how tough it can be to make a decision, especially when it comes to a smartwatch. You're in luck because we've done all the dirty work for you. We've gathered the information you need to help you choose between the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active and the Michael Kors Access Sofie.

Top-notch fitness tracking

Galaxy Watch Active

$200 at Amazon

Pros

  • Lightweight, comfy design
  • Robust fitness tracking
  • Good battery life

Cons

  • Less stylish appearance
  • Tizen OS can be challenging

The Galaxy Watch Active has a lot to offer. The design might be a bit bland, and Tizen OS isn't the best, but these points pale in comparison to the positives. You'll enjoy extensive activity tracking, built-in GPS, heart rate monitoring, and more.

Fashionable smartwatch

Michael Kors Access Sofie

$200 at Amazon

Pros

  • Fancy, stylish design
  • Highly customizable
  • Google Assistant

Cons

  • Limited features
  • Lacks GPS and NFC

If you take on a "less is more" attitude when it comes to your wristwear, the Michael Kors Sofie was made for you. It provides you with the basics for day-to-day life but doesn't expect many extras. It's hard to complain when a smartwatch looks this amazing.

First and foremost, both of these smartwatches are compatible with both Android and iOS. However, it's worth noting that they'll be most appreciated by existing Samsung/Android users. It's a much more seamless experience when it comes to apps and notifications. If this isn't something that bothers you and you're comfortable dabbling in both worlds, more power to you.

What are your priorities?

The best way to decide between any two smartwatches is to determine what your priorities are. Most importantly, do you care more about looks, or are you investing in a smartwatch for fitness tracking and other bonus features? Either way, there's something for everyone with these two devices. However, given that they're the same price and the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active has much more to offer in the way of fitness tracking and smart features, it's the clear winner between these two.

Both the Galaxy Watch Active and the Michael Kors Sofie offer stunning AMOLED displays that are a joy to look at. Most of your navigating will take place through touching and swiping. The Active offers a home and a back button on the right side of the watch while the Sofie provides a single button on the right side that opens a list of installed apps. You can also long-press it to access the Google Assistant.

Galaxy Watch Active Michael Kors Sofie
Display AMOLED 1.1-inch, 360x360 AMOLED 1.19-inch,
390x390
Dimensions 39.5 x 39.5 x 10.5 mm 42 x 42 x 11mm
Sensors Accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, heart rate sensor, light sensor Accelerometer, gyroscope, light sensor
Connectivity Bluetooth4.2, Wi-Fi Bluetooth 4.1 BLE, Wi-Fi
Operating System Tizen Android Wear
Battery life Up to 2 days 1 day
Storage 4GB 4GB
Built-in GPS Yes No
NFC Yes No
Water resistance 5ATM 1ATM

Aside from the similar displays and navigation, the only other features these two smartwatches have in common are activity tracking, 4 GB of storage, a few of the same sensors, and Bluetooth capability. The Active promises twice the amount of battery life and offers a better water resistance rating. That's not all that's different, though.

The Michael Kors Sofie caters to women with its dazzling design and ultra-slim profile. And while it does support basic fitness tracking such as calories burned, steps taken, and distance traveled, it's hard to imagine using a smartwatch this elegant during rigorous physical activity.

Night and day

Pictured: Michael Kors Access Sofie

At the very least, it will serve its purpose for very basic tracking. The 20mm straps are interchangeable, so you could always swap for something more exercise-friendly. After all, it would be a crying shame to do damage to the glamorous band that comes with the watch.

You can personalize your watch face to match your mood and customize your notifications, so you only receive the ones that matter. You'll also enjoy the convenience of having Google Assistant right on your wrist, which can even be used when replying to notifications on an Android device. Speaking of Google, there's plenty more where that came from. The Sofie comes preloaded with the calendar, Google Fit, and Google Workout. Any others that you could want are most likely available for download on the Google Play store.

Keep in mind that the Sofie relies heavily on your phone for certain functions.

Keep in mind that the Sofie relies heavily on your phone for specific functions. There's no built-in GPS, but the watch can retrieve GPS data from your phone. Additionally, if your watch is paired with an Android phone and has Wi-Fi, your watch can automatically connect to saved Wi-Fi networks when the Bluetooth connection with your phone is lost. This allows your watch and phone to stay synced over the Internet. This means you can still get notifications and use voice search.

Pictured: Samsung Galaxy Watch Active

Now for the Galaxy Watch Active, which will be far less about physical design and much more about what's inside. Sure, you can pick which color you prefer but other than that, it's a pretty straight-forward watch design. Again, you have the option to find a more suitable band thanks to 20mm interchangeable straps.

As for tracking and other features, this is the area where the Active really hits it out of the park.

As for tracking and other features, this is the area where the Active really hits it out of the park. You'll enjoy heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, automatic activity detection for a handful of exercises, built-in GPS, smartphone notifications (and replies for Android), Samsung Pay, blood pressure monitoring, and more.

It's not hard to tell that the list of features for the Active is significantly more impressive than the Sofie's. If you're a fitness-focused individual who can compromise when it comes to the aesthetics of your smartwatch, it only makes sense to go with the Active. You'd be missing out on a ton of features for the sole purpose of having a pretty device on your wrist that can't do much when it comes to tracking.

Decision time

Depending on how you plan to use your smartwatch, this might be a relatively easy decision. There is no difference in price, which is almost hard to believe when you do a side-by-side comparison of the features. However, if you're simply seeking a capable smartwatch that's lovely to look at and easy to use, the Michael Kors Sofie is the one for you.

If you prefer to get more bang for your buck and you're more concerned about fitness than fashion, the Galaxy Watch Active is the better choice by a long shot. It might not be as flashy, but it's packed with features, and it makes the perfect fitness companion. If you're going to spend this much on a smartwatch, you should get your money's worth.

Oculus Quest devices are selling as fast as Facebook can make them

The Oculus Quest is selling so well that Facebook has a hard time keeping them in stock.

What you need to know

  • The Oculus Quest is selling well, according to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • The standalone headset has earned positive reviews from several outlets.
  • Orders for the Oculus Quest are often delayed due to stock shortages.

The Oculus Quest is performing well according to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In the Facebook Q2 2019 Earnings call, Zuckerberg stated that Oculus Quest devices are "selling as fast as we can make them" (via RoadtoVR). This isn't that surprising of a statement considering that shipments of Oculus Quest orders are often delayed in the U.S. and Europe while stock of the headset is filled.

The Oculus Quest has received positive reviews from several outlets, including our own review, and many developers have hopped on board. The Oculus Quest recently passed 50 games in the Oculus Store and is set to receive more throughout this year.

Following his statement on sales, Zuckerberg emphasized the improvements that Oculus has seen over the last few years.

More importantly, we've delivered an experience that people keep using week after week, and buying more content. There's still a lot of work ahead to develop this ecosystem and deliver the future of VR and AR products that we dream of, but this is an important milestone. In a few years, we've improved the state of the art from the original Rift, which cost $600 and needed to be tethered to a $1000 PC, to now Quest, which costs $400 all in, and is a superior experience in many ways.

Oculus did not release any sales numbers for the Oculus Quest, but it's safe to say from Zuckerberg's comments that the headset is doing well. Several factors can affect the speed of manufacturing and shipping devices, so it's difficult to discern any concrete figures from his statement.

The Oculus Quest has everything you need to run it in the box, but you can still add some accessories to enhance the experience and help you take it with you.

Oculus Quest Travel Case

This case will protect your Oculus Quest when you're on the go and has enough room for the headset and Touch Controllers.

These batteries can be recharged up to 2,100 times and are a great way to keep your Touch Controllers charged and ready to go.

Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 with notchless display debuts in India

The Y9 Prime also has a USB-C port but lacks fast charging support.

What you need to know

  • Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 is a budget Android phone with a large 6.59-inch display and Kirin 710F chipset.
  • The smartphone has been priced at ₹15,990 ($231) in India.
  • It will be going on sale in the country starting August 7 via Amazon.in.

Huawei today launched a new budget Android phone in India, dubbed the Y9 Prime 2019. Even though its name may suggest that it is an all-new device, that isn't actually the case. The Y9 Prime 2019 is a rebranded version of the P Smart Z that debuted in Europe earlier this year.

The smartphone features a 6.59-inch notchless display with Full HD+ resolution and a highly impressive 91% screen-to-body ratio. It runs on a 12nm Kirin 710F octa-core processor supporting GPU Turbo 3.0 and comes in a single variant with 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage. The phone includes a microSD card slot, so you will be able to expand the storage further by up to 512GB.

While the Y9 Prime is identical to the P Smart Z in most areas, there is one key difference between the two phones. Instead of the 16MP + 2MP dual camera setup in the P Smart Z, the Y9 Prime offers a triple camera setup with an additional 8MP ultra-wide sensor. The smartphone's rear camera is backed by AI, offering intelligent scene detection and 3D Portrait features. For selfies, the phone has a 16MP pop-up camera that Huawei claims to have tested over 100,000 times for durability.

Some of the other key features of the Y9 Prime 2019 include a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a 4,000mAh battery. Unlike some of the other phones that are available in the same segment, the Y9 Prime does not offer fast charging. It runs on Huawei's EMUI 9.0 based on Android Pie and is expected to be upgraded to Android Q before the end of the year.

The Huawei Y9 Prime will be available in India via Amazon.in from August 7 for ₹15,990 ($230). Introductory offers include 10% instant discount with SBI credit cards, ₹500 Amazon Pay cashback, No Cost EMI for up to six months, and ₹2,200 cashback for Jio users. The phone comes in two colors: Emerald Green and Sapphire Blue.

Latest Fortnite patch features tons of vaulted items

The latest content update for Fortnite — the 10.00 patch — is out today, and with it comes the introduction of the latest season for the battle royale. With Fortnite now officially in its tenth season, some big changes come to the game, including the addition of a gigantic mech and the removal of a lot of items.

By far the biggest change to the world of Fortnite is the B.R.U.T.E., a mech suit that will drop into the game along with the battle bus. The mech is made for two people to pilot, with one controlling movement and the other controlling its weapons, and is clearly going to result in some major changes to play styles.

Also coming to the game is Rift Zones, areas of the map that seem to feature former locations in the game with new gameplay changes attached to them. According to the trailer for Season X, there will be areas with restrictions to things like looting, and even the return of past locations like Dusty Depot.

Needless to say, Season X brings with it some hefty changes to Fortnite, so make sure to jump in and check them out as soon as you can. You can check out the full list of changes to the Battle Royale portions of Fortnite below, and jump into a game now to check out the changes:

  • The driver is able to dash into combat, super Jump to victory, stomp enemies and structures into the ground, and do anything you would normally harvest will grant materials when destroyed.

  • The passenger has two weapons at their disposal: a shotgun and a missile launcher.

  • New Overshield mechanic: Consumes 200 of any Material type to create a personal overshield for 5 seconds to protect you in the mech.

Vaulted Items

Climb aboard giant mechs in the newest season of Fortnite

Giant mechs, new areas, and more!

What you need to know

  • Fortnite's newest season - Season X - is finally here.
  • The new season comes with new ways to fight, including a giant mech called the B.R.U.T.E.
  • A brand new battle pass is also available, promising new character skins, rewards, and more.

Fortnite Season X is officially out now, and as is the case in seasons past, the world of Fortnite is once again changing. After the glowing orb in Fortnite continued to grow more unstable, it seems to have exploded, setting off the chain reaction that causes the events of Season X.

From the looks of the trailer for Season X, time is all distorted in the world of Fortnite. Fans who want some popular locations from the past may get their wish, and there also seems to be some brand new areas to explore as well. Of course, the biggest inclusion seems to be the B.R.U.T.E., a giant two-person mech that is new to the game. After the giant robot and monster fought at the end of Season 9, it seems as if mechs will now play a part in the latest season of Fortnite. Season X will also include Rift Zones, which are areas of the map that seem to feature former locations in the game with new gameplay changes attached to them. The exact nature of the Rift Zones are still a mystery, but we'll likely learn more as people play.

Of course, a brand new season of Fortnite also means another Battle Pass, which includes 100 levels and over 100 rewards for players to grab. As per usual, the Season 9 Battle Pass is available in-game for 950 V-Bucks, and will reward various exclusive rewards to pick up. New to the Fortnite Season X Battle Pass are Missions, which are thematic objectives that will have you traveling across the island in search of rewards.

For a more detailed breakdown of what's new in Season X, check out below, and if you want to try it for yourself, you can find it in the game now:
