Update October 26, 2018:Pako Forever our pick for game of the week!
Pako Forever
I've become a quick fan of Tree Men Games since I first featured their action driving game Pako 2 in this space, a game that has you driving around the desert as a getaway driver outrunning relentlessly pursuing police cars. Pako 2 wasn't wholly unique as a concept with the low-fi rendered aesthetic certainly reminding me of classic action-driving games like Driver or top-down GTA titles. The police cars chasing you are dead set on taking you off the road at any cost, so you must summon your best drifting and dodging skills to stay alive, making the game challenging and slightly different each time you play.
With Pako Forever, the gameplay is scaled back a bit — the desert is replaced with a near-deserted parking lot filled with the getaway driver aspect replaced with a challenging endless driver game. But in many ways, Forever has been streamlined the gameplay formula for the better. The methods for unlocking new vehicles are linked to completing in-game challenges rather than spending in-game currency, and each vehicle has a nice collection of stats for longest survival time, the total number of crashes caused, and your total distance traveled.
Pako Forever is one of those games that'll have you going "okay, but just one more go.
Unlike the previous titles where your car had multiple hit points, it's one and done with Pako Forever. That means some of your chases will end in seconds as you accidentally careen straight into a tree, while others will be ended by a speeding police car that spawns coming straight at you head-on. Fortunately, the game delivers you a special power-up once every 10 seconds or so, sometimes letting you destroy every pursuing vehicle on the screen, and sometimes giving your vehicle a brief upgrade to help fend them off.
Pako Forever is one of those games that'll have you going "okay, but just one more go", because this massive parking lot that you're driving around is full of hidden areas and random encounters to discover. Nearby random encounters will be announced at the top of the screen, but it'll still be up to you to track it down without getting busted.
In the mobile space, there's a ton of value for a game that lets you jump right into the action and play for short sessions without bogging the experience down loot crates or other distractions. Pako Forever delivers the straight goods for anyone who loves a good driving challenge.
