With the PlayStation 5 still set to release in Holiday 2020, Sony may be looking at increasing the number of game development studios it owns. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Sony is currently considering a big on Leyou corporation. Leyou is a video game holdings company based out of Hong Kong. It owns Digital Extremes, Splash Damage, Athlon Games, Kingmaker, Radiance Games and a 20% stake in Certain Affinity.
Digital Extremes are the developers of Warframe, a popular free-to-play title. Meanwhile, Splash Damage has done support work on the Gears of War franchise, including leading development on Gears Tactics. Splash Damage is also working on a Stadia-exclusive game.
Nothing has been finalized yet and Sony is entering into a bidding war with other contenders, per Bloomberg's report.
Leyou is currently valued at roughly $1.1 billion. Sony acquired Insomniac Games in 2019 for around $229 million, mostly in cash. If this bid and subsequent acquisition were to go through, it's currently unclear whether these studios would be integrated into Sony Worldwide Studios or would remain separate in some capacity.
