The new TiVo Bolt OTA gives cord cutters more options

Broadcast live TV.

If you're a cord-cutter with no cable subscription and use an over-the-air antenna like this to get your broadcast television, TiVo has a new device that should appeal to you. The new TiVo Bolt OTA gives you all the commercial-skipping, live-tv-recording, app-streaming features of previous TiVo devices, but for the first time in several years, since the Roamio OTA, this is a device that does not come with a cable card or need cable subscriptions to work. Instead, you just plug the OTA antenna you're already using into it, and the TiVo will let you record whatever signals you pick up.

You'll also be able to access streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video. Since this is part of the Bolt lineup, it includes a lot of the features the old Bolt Vox has, including support for 4K and HDR, integration with Amazon's Alexa smart home ecosystem, and more. Since it has been a few years since the last Bolt product was released, TiVo says the new Bolt OTA will be as much as seven times faster as well.

You'll be able to connect the Bolt OTA directly to a TV, but because it also has four tuners you'll be able to stream to up to four different mobile devices as well. You'll just need the TiVo app installed on the device you want to use or a TiVo Mini hooked up to it.

When the Bolt OTA becomes available later this week it will retail for $249.99. TiVo will also require a $7 monthly service fee. If you are not interested in paying a monthly fee, you could look into the new Amazon Fire TV Recast. It does much of the same things, but it only has two tuners, doesn't directly connect to a TV, and has less storage on the base model.
